A hard days night

I finally sent book 3 to my freelance editor last night. I'm hoping it won't have to travel back and forth between the two of us for very long. Edits can be a grueling process and for sure they are a necessary evil.

For writers; Do you dread getting your work back from people who help edit your novel? Are you able to handle critiques well?

For readers; Feel free to ask anything about book 3 or just stop in and say hi!

  1. I dread geting feedback, but because I dread it so much it usually isn't as bad as I thought it would be. I like brutal feedback though. If someone tells me everything that's wrong with my manuscript then it ends up stronger. I'd hate a beta reader to hold back a negative comment for fear of hurting my feelings.

  2. I'm actually excited to be sending book 1 to my beta-readers in the next couple of weeks. Their feedback on my other book was great and it really helps tighten up my writing.

  3. Christine - Brutal feedback is tough, but if you consider the benefits, well worth a hurt feeling or two. I agree, I'd hate for a Beta to hold back.

Claudia - Sounds like you have an awesome group of Betas!!

  4. Just wondering if you have chapter 1 or anything from book 3 posted anywhere? I'm really excited about it and can't wait! Thanks for your awesome books!

  5. Wendyirp - I don't, but I'm seriously considering doing this in the back of book 3, putting a chapter sample of book 4. It's a great idea if I don't chicken out of the concept. I'm afraid of anything being concrete before its time. And I'm so glad you're enjoying the series! I love book 3 and I hope you will too!

  6. Addison, have you thought about having any beta readers for book 3? I am actually reading my first book as a beta reader! I think it's a great idea for some strong feedback before a book goes public!

Are there any hints you can give to us patiently waiting readers about book 3??!! Teasers...

  7. Hi Amanda! I have 3 beta's and a freelance editor, I always hold my breath while they're reading! It's nerve wracking when I finally get back the edits, but alas, they are always right.

And teasers for Book 3? Lets see.......Chloe's diary provides a few unexpected surprises that Skyla never saw coming. Lots of drama with her love life, and new enemies emerge on the scene. Skyla is in more danger than ever before. :)

I'm hoping to reveal cover art and title next week!

  9. Hi Addison,

Out of curiosity, would you mind sharing who you use as a freelance editor and their fee(s), that is if that person is open to new potential clientele?

    Thanks, Widow

  10. Widow Dyer - I think my freelance editor took me up as a favor, plus she's getting married next week and is crazy busy the rest of the summer, but I'll ask her if she wants the word out. In the meantime I know of one other gal named Tiffany, here is her website http://writingcareercoach.com/

  11. Happytrout _ I am so glad you enjoyed my novel! I love hearing positive feedback!!! As for a paper edition, I'm working hard right now to figure out what to do about print. Hopefully in a month I'll have news on that front. ~Happy reading!!!!

  13. Can't wait Addison!!

Something non book 3 related... I actually read on Nicole Williams blog that you may be teaming up with her (schedule permitting) and some other authors for a short story collection. How cool! I think Nicole is a talented author, and enjoyed her book Eternal Eden. Any news on this (if you'll be participating or not)?

  14. Jamie - I'm really anticipating getting mine back too! Can't wait!

Amanda - I actually was interested, but couldn't work within the deadline, so I had to decline the offer. I'm still really bummed about that! And I agree, Nicole is a really great writer!

  15. Great post! I am awarding you with The Irresistibly Sweet Blog Award! Come on over to my blog to check it out! :)

  16. Amy - That is so sweet thank you so much!

  17. Do you happen to have a tentative date set for book 3? I'm about to jump out of my skin in anticipation! I'm reading about 10 different series and im currently awaiting 8 different books to release, but yours is the one I'm most looking forward too! Thank you for pulling me into your writing and actually keeping me there. Also, I was very happy that your books did not have any significant editing errors. With the kindle, I read many books which have horrible editing and its very distracting. :)

    ReplyDelete
  18. Danielleflippo - I really don't have a hard date set and that's because it could take up to three days to upload to Amazon and for sure it can take longer for the Nook. What I could do is announce once I launch it then at least you would know it was waiting to upload on their system.

I should be getting my edits back today from my editor and depending how much work she's given me, that's how long it will take. I'm guessing a week at the least. That's what I'm hoping for. =)

It makes me SO happy that you're anticipating book 3. Book 3 has so many payoff, that I'm hoping you'll be happy with it.

  19. LOVE th3 cover for "Burn" and I cannot wait for this book!! The last one ended on such a cliffhanger! EXCITED!!

  20. KATA - Thank you! I can't wait to put it out there!

  21. Aww, fantastic! All your hard work is about to pay off, very excited for you! :D

I play for both teams in this case—I'm a writer and an editor! It can be grueling, but I find that no matter what side you're on, if you have a great relationship with your editor/writer it makes life much less stressful :) Just my fluffy POV!

  22. Katie Lynn - You are so right! I luv my editor to death and I honestly would not be able to do this without her. She is priceless.

  23. Addison, I chose to start the Celestra Series while in between a few other series. After reading just a small part of Etherreal I was addicted! It was so bad that I was trying to read it on my phone while brushing my teeth! Haha just couldn't put it down & I certainly cant wait for book 3! I've already recommended the series to a few co-workers. Excellent job! How many books are planned in the series? (sorry if that's already been asked)

    ReplyDelete
  24. Candace - Wow, I'm so humbled to hear how much you liked the book. Thank you! And that you've recommended it to friends is beyond nice of you, so double thank you!!!!

I'm almost ready to put out book 3 and I've already outlined book four. I'm not entirely sure how many books will be in the series, but I'm guessing over six. =)

  25. I love your writing! My kindle suggested your Celestra series and I have fallen in love with them!! I read the first book yesterday and then started the second one and finished it today. I can't wait for the next one and am suggesting them to my friends!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Jenhil5 - I'm happy to hear you liked them! And I am forever indebted that you would recommend them to your friends! THANK YOU!!!

  27. I'm a new writer, so any kind of feedback helps me out! I won't say I handle all critiques well, especially if its a character or part of the story that I loved, but most of the time the editor is right (they are the readers, after all). My story becomes more seamless because of them.

I recently came across your books on my kindle, and I love them! I seriously can't wait for Burned! And if you have any advice for a new writer that knows nothing of the publishing/editing/making income aspect of writing, I would appreciate it. :)

  28. Jenn - The one thing I know is true about writing is that you have to write everyday if possible. It's better to sit down and do it than read a thousand books on the subject, but I also recommend trying to read at least one book on the craft a month. Also read books in your genre. It's so vital to still be a reader when you write even though your time is sparse at that point. As for critiques, they never get easier. I always let my critiques sit for a day to get over the idea that my way is better. ;) Good luck to you in your writing!

  29. I love your writing! I go back and re-read so many of the things the characters say because it's so witty and realistic.

I must say my favorite is the texts about rutting..."Gage would very much like to rut with you"

Never even heard of it being put that way.

I read each in a day, which is saying a lot since I have two kids running around and don't get many chances to sit down and read. You kept me up late, and I loved it!

It's nice to read a story that has compelling writing. Even the scenes that don't have anything truly exciting in them are exciting because of how great the characters are and how funny Skyla's inner monologuing is.

I will read everything you write. Thanks for a great story!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Mel-B - lol about the rutting! That's still one of my favorite scenes. ;)

Thank you so much for the kind words. I'm blown away that nice people like you would take time out of your day to stop by and let me know how you feel. I can't even tell you how nice that makes me feel. I really hope you enjoy BURN. I can't wait to push it out into the world.

  31. I am sad to say I have yet to read your books, but I plan to! I'm sure that you are an amazing writer and I can't wait to dive right into your books as soon as I finish this other series. I was surprised to see your questions at the end of your entries and they made smile a bit. I am an aspiring writer, I dream of it and desire it almost everyday. I honestly can't handle giving my writing over to someone and having them pick at it, but I figure it is worth it in the end if it'll make it better. I'd love to know how you got published and how you managed to finish your first book. Actually I have so many questions.

  32. Amanda - being a writer is one intense ride, but oh so worth it. The best advice I could give is to read a lot in your genre and write everyday if you can. Whether or not you want to publish with traditional publishers or go indie is a personal choice (of course there is the option of both, which I think will soon be the norm) nevertheless map out a game plan and go with it. Most of all have fun with it!

  33. Thank you so much!! I will definitely try this and I have been slacking lately, before six months ago I would write at least 2,000 or more words a day, every day. But I just barely started up again. I hope to be as awesome as you someday. I most definitely will be having some fun!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Amanda - 2K a day rocks! If you can get back to that, you are golden!

    ReplyDelete
  35. I'm really hoping so! Me and one of my dearest friends were just throwing ideas around, which is the norm for us. We both always find ourselves telling stories in our heads, daydreaming sort of. She had this amazing one and I've been thinking on one for a few days. I'm going to try!! Thank you so much!!

  37. I think I speak for everyone when I say I'm compelled to write something. Your books are the kind that make you say "NOOOOOOOO!!!!" when they end. Thank you for supplying some good entertainment.

I feel like I've stumbled upon a gem with you and your books. The one thing I don't like is that I went back to reading some other things and was so disappointed with how corny some of the character lines were. I'm reading them like "WHO EVEN SAYS THAT!" lol With your character's lines I think "WHY DIDN'T I THINK OF THAT!"

Is Burned the final book in the series?

    I'll be recommending this series

    ReplyDelete
  38. Amanda - It sounds like you have great friends! I think brainstorming is half the fun. Good luck and keep me posted! =)

  39. Mel-B - Thank you so much for your SUPER kind words. I'm glad my books have motivated you to write! Writing provides an emotional outlet that I find extremely satisfying. It's a labor of love and when I'm not writing, I'm thinking about my characters.

  40. I just started Burn yesterday around noon & just finished. All I can say is incredible! Amazing ending & I just can't wait until book 4. Definitely think this needs to be a really long series! Haha I don't want it to end.

  41. candace87125 - You're a quick reader! Thank you for your kind words. I'm hoping the series will be a long one too. I'm going to try and let it end naturally. Have a great rest of the weekend! =)

  42. A co-worker told me about the Celestra series, and i cant put it down!!! She told me it was so good that she was trying to read it while she was brushing her teeth....i was stuck in traffic 3 days ago and i was reading from phone while stuck in traffic on the interstate!! lol I am in the middle of book 2 and cant wait to read #3...please keep them coming!!

  43. jenvin11 - I'm so glad you're enjoying the series! I'm having a blast writing them and book 4 is no exception. I can't wait to get it out into the world. Please thank your coworker for me for introducing you to the books! Word of mouth is the most powerful mode of advertising and I'm so thankful she shared it with you. Please stop by anytime. I hope you enjoy the rest of TREMBLE and BURN. ~Happy reading!

  46. I was looking for a good book to read when I downloaded Ethereal... I couldn't put it down. I read it within four hours and began to download the second book Tremble... same thing... proceeded on to Burn and now you've left me shocked... and wanting more. I don't know if I will possibly be able to wait until September. I was taken totally by surprise and I'm interested to see what happens next. You are a talented Author with a true gift for writing. I know I quickly became a fan of your work. I'm counting down the days until the fourth book comes out. Can't wait!

  47. Randi - First, thank you very much for reading my books! I'm thrilled that BURN took you by surprise in the end and I'll tell you right now that book 4 picks up right where BURN left off. Thank you for your kind words regarding my writing. I really hope that when book 4 finally hits the e-shelves, you'll enjoy that one too. =)
